Who is Zehra Gunes? Turkish volleyball player going viral


Turkish volleyball player Zehra Gunes’ fan club has grown exponentially since her Olympic debut.

Zehra Güneş was born on 7 July 1999 in Kartal, İstanbul, Turkey. By profession, she is a Turkish female volleyball player. She plays in the middle blocker position. Currently, she plays for Vakıfbank Istanbul and is a member of the Turkey women’s national volleyball team. She enjoyed her first league champion title in the 2017–18 season with Vakıfbank Istanbul.

She was awarded the “Vestel Special Prize” of the 2017–18 Vestel Venus Sultans League. She participated in the 2017–18 CEV Women’s Champions League with her team Vakıfbank Istanbul, which became champion. She played at the 2015 European Youth Summer Olympic Festival held in Georgia.

The 22-year-old’s name began trending on Twitter amid the Turkish team’s nail-biting loss to South Korea Wednesday in the women’s volleyball quarterfinals. Turkey failed to punch a ticket to the semifinals after the two-hour and 17-minute match.

While fans praised Gunes for her performance in Tokyo and her overall skills, some were distracted by her striking appearance. One fan with a crush even declared, “Zehra Gunes marry me,” in reference to the 6-foot-6 Turkish athlete, who sports No. 18.
